FBC: Firebreak from Remedy Entertainment is preparing to ship its first Major Update in late September. Having released and patched the game, as well as listened to player feedback, the dev team is now focusing on expanding content and deepening the game's systems. This major update is the first big step in that direction.
The first step of this update is to improve onboarding into this co-op shooter game. As the dev team already knows through data and player reports, a significant number of players leave the game within their first hour. In order to make the experience more welcoming and enjoyable, the update will feature a story-led introduction into the game, a playable tutorial level, and better contextual tips.
These additions are designed to both teach you the mechanics of the game, as well as retaining the mystery and texture of the Control universe.
Improvements to the gunplay and equipment are also on the way. The team's priorities with weapons are to stop the generic upgrades feeling weak and disappointing, by adding a Mod system to your gear, and three new heavy guns.
Firebreak players will also start the game with all their essential tools unlocked and working at some capacity, giving them more agency and variation from the get-go.
The most significant addition is a full revamp of the Crisis Board. This handcrafted system will completely overhaul how players access and experience Jobs. Removing Clearance and Corruption Levels from the main loop, the board will allow for more variety in the scenarios that players face.
The goal with this is to push players to make more strategic decisions and replay the same levels in different ways, by randomizing some objectives, items, and threats.
A new Job will also be available as part of the update, with a handcrafted level, three new Zones, two new enemy types, and a silly new mechanic internally referred to as the “sushi train.” This level will also introduce a new status effect to the game.
The dev team also have plans to ship more updates in the winter and beyond. However, they want to see how the update is received before making any more hard commitments. For now, they're focused on ensuring the September release delivers.
