Gearbox Software CEO, Randy Pitchford has further explained cosmetic items and microtransactions in Borderlands 3. Pitchford said that cosmetic items will be free in loot drops while DLC cosmetics will be added only if players demand it.
It looks like Gearbox Software CEO, Randy Pitchford can't decide if the upcoming looter shooter Borderlands 3 will offer in-game microtransactions or not. Earlier this week, during Borderlands 3 gameplay reveal, Pitchford talked about the in-game cosmetics and what exactly can players expect from the third instalment in the Borderlands series.
His words caused more confusion than clarification as Randy mentioned that Borderlands 3 will not have microtransactions, only cosmetic items. Of course, everything that can be purchased in-game with real-world money is considered as microtransaction item and with Borderlands 3 it's no different.
Whether you sell cosmetic items that don't affect gameplay, XP boosters, weapons or anything else, these items are microtransactions. Pitchford tried to explain his words by saying that he talked about loot boxes and other shady stuff when he mentioned microtransactions, but players were having none of it.
In his latest attempt to clarify Borderlands 3's microtransactions, Pitchford said that cosmetic items will be available for free as part of the loot drops and that DLC cosmetics will be added in post-launch updates only if players demand it.
"There will be tons of cosmetic drops as (free) loot in Borderlands 3. Currently, there are no plans for any cosmetic DLC, but I anticipate there will be customer demand post-launch that we will be excited to meet," Pitchford wrote in his tweet.
As you play the game you will be able to find things like skins, heads, and other customisation items from enemies, stashes and other places in the game's world. Additionally, even if Gearbox introduce DLC cosmetics at later date, most of the Borderlands players would probably be ok with it if the pattern follows closely the one found in Borderlands 2.
Along with cosmetic DLCs, Gearbox also have plans to release story DLC, but the devs are not ready to talk about these in detail just yet. They only said that Borderlands 3 will have a similar number of DLCs like Borderlands 2.
Borderlands 3 is out on 13 September 2019 for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
