Riot Games unveiled the next marksman champion to join League of Legends - Aphelios, the Weapon of the Faithful. Currently, there are only the lore entries and hints on his mechanics while actual abilities and stats are still a mystery.
League of Legends news are overwhelmed with the esports transfers and their rumours but Riot Games decided to drop a combo breaker by revealing the new champion. Aphelios will be a marksman with a wide variety of weapons and zero uttered words. His title does not refer to a religious cult even though that's the way it sounds and he was raised by one. The following two paragraphs contain spoilers for but also explain how his powers came to be.
It actually refers to his sister, Alune. As the lore goes, Aphelios and Alune were born into the Lunari religion on Targon after the Solari, who consider them heretics, chased them into hiding. The two formed a strong bond and when Alune's duties as a seer made her leave the temple, Aphelios' faith wavered.
Once every year, Lunari's holy temple pops out of the spirit realm and it can be visited by the most magically gifted individual of the Lunari tribe. This time around it was Alune but during the ceremony, the Solari , much like the Spanish Inquisition. A battle broke out, Lunari were about to be exterminated but Alune hopped into the temple and used its magic to provide her martially gifted brother with a pile of magical weapons. Oh, and she can do that because Aphelios is eating some weed that rendered him mute.
Therefore, we can expect the new marksman to keep switching between weapons, which could potentially mean he will have a varying range of stats, based on what gifts Alune sends from the other side. Aphelios should join the PBE roster soon, which is when we will know more about his actual mechanics.
