In the latest development video, Panache Digital Games have showcased some of the RPG mechanics in their survival game Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. The video reveals skill trees and how experimentation can lead to different paths.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a third-person survival game from the co-creator of Assassin's Creed Patrice Desilets with a couple of interesting ideas. To put it as simple as possible, the goal of the game is to roam neogene Africa and evolve to the Australopithecus, going from prey to predator.

During the evolution, players will get to build clans, have babies and learn how to navigate the open world. Desilets describes it as a game of trial and error, much like natural selection.

In the latest development video, Desilets also offered a couple of new details about the game's RPG mechanics such as skill trees and choices and consequences that players will have to face in their playthroughs.

According to Desilets, curiosity and experimentation are key as players will forge their own unique paths through an evolution based on their decisions. You will be able to experiment with your character trough three skill trees - Neuronal, Generation and Evolution.

These skill trees will have different abilities which you can unlock by spending points you previously earned while playing. For example, Handling ability will allow you to drop an object while moving.

In the Generation skill tree, you can fast forward fifteen years in the future. Babies will grow into adults, while adults will become elders and so on. This will shape the look and structure of your clan.

Desilets says that Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a game inspired by science but it will allow players to break these boundaries and evolve faster or in different ways "than science is telling us".

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is set to be released for PC via Epic Games Store on 27 August 2019 and sometime in December 2019 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
