Amazon Games seems to finally have a hit on their hands as New World shot up to the top of Steam's most-played games list, ahead of the resident giants.
Steam keeps track of the most played games on the platform and there are four usual suspects that are hogging the top four positions - CS:GO, Dota 2, PUBG and Apex Legends. However, New World managed to swim up to the top on the launch day of September 28, 2021, at roughly 10:35 AM PDT / 1:35 PM EDT / 6:35 PM BST / 7:35 PM CEST.
At the time of capturing the image of the player count you can see below, New World had 704,674 concurrent players which is fantastic for any new release, especially when you keep in mind this is an MMO and it's not a free to play game.
That said, the high player count does not reflect the review score currently as many players are complaining about long queues and being unable to get in.
These are probably sweet woes to have for Amazon Games, who found themselves with a giant release mere months after shutting down Crucible, which only managed to peak at around 10,600 concurrent players .
Furthermore, it's rather normal for MMO launches to have day one issues with lag and queues, which are bound to subside in the coming days. Once the dust from release settles, it might be worth taking another look at the player reviews as they will most likely be much higher.
