Sony's heavy hitter God of War took the ultimate award but Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 snagged a couple of shiny trophies as well. Of course, Epic's battle royale wonder Fortnite was among the winners along with indie title Celeste.
The Games Awards 2018 show was held last night although reveals and other big announcements took the spotlight off of winners a bit. It was still their night though so we've decided to amend this in our The Games Awards winners roundup.
SIE Santa Monica's action-adventure God of War may have lost to Fortnite in The Golden Joystick's Game of the Year awards but last night, Kratos and his boy fought back. The competition was no joke, with names like Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Marvel's Spider-Man, Monster Hunter: World and Rockstar's masterpiece Red Dead Redemption 2.
God of War also won the Best Game Direction award, which is even more impressive considering that it ran against Detroit: Become Human, A Way Out, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Spidey.
Red Dead Redemption 2 was God of War's closest rival with two wins - Best Narrative and Best Performance. The latter went to Roger Clark, the man lending his voice to Arthur Morgan in Rockstar's western.
Other nominees included Melissanthi Mahut as Kassandra from Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Christopher Judge who gave his voice to Kratos, Bryan Dechart as Connor in Detroit: Become Human and Yuri Lowenthal as Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Epic's battle royale Fortnite was nominated in only one category - Best Ongoing Game and it took the win ahead of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch, Destiny 2 and No Man's Sky.
Rockstar Games
Return of the Obra Dinn's black and white graphics took the trophy for Best Art Direction, a huge achievement for a game that competed with God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Octopath Traveler.
Popular Fortnite streamer Ninja won the Content Creator / Streamer of the Year award while Dominique ‘Sonic Fox’ McLean is the best ESports player in 2018.
Best indie game of 2018 is Matt Makes Games' platformer Celeste and the Best Debut Indie Game award went to Sabotage Studio's The Messenger. Other nominees included Dead Cells, Into the Breach, Donut County, Florence and Moss.
