Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is finally coming to Xbox consoles

Beloved real-time strategy Age of Empires 2 is coming to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles later this month and you can now pre-order it on the Xbox store.

Just as Xbox promised last year, the Age of Empires franchise is coming to Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One. The first in line to launch on Microsoft's consoles is Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition, which launches in just a couple of weeks on January 31, 2023.

Today, Xbox revealed more details about Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition for consoles and confirmed that pre-orders are now open on the Xbox store . Additionally, Xbox confirmed that players who own Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition on PC, won't have to buy the game again on consoles, which is certainly nice.

The game will also have a Deluxe Edition, which includes the three expansions - Lords of the West, Dawn of the Dukes and Dynasties of India.

Obviously, controller support is confirmed for both Xbox and Xbox Cloud Gaming on PC. Xbox say the controls have been optimized for players with a controller and they've added some new tutorials to help you get into the fun quickly. Keyboard and mouse is also supported on consoles, for those who prefer the traditional way of playing strategies.

If you are a PC Game Pass subscriber, you will not be able to play Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition on consoles since you need a higher subscription tier like Game Pass Ultimate which includes both console and PC Game Pass.

Last but not least, Xbox once again reiterated that Age of Empires IV is coming to Xbox consoles later this year, but they didn't give us a specific release date just yet.

Sadly, we didn't get to see any new gameplay, that would give us a closer look at how the controller controls work in the game but hopefully, Xbox will reveal some footage at their upcoming Developer Direct next week.

All in all, that's plenty of good news for Xbox and Age of Empires fans who eagerly awaited this popular real-time strategy on consoles. For Xbox, this release kicks off their 2023 which is shaping up to be quite the year with games like Starfield , Forza Motorsport , Redfall and more.
