Void Crew Review: A stellar co-op adventure in space
Void Crew first impressions
Void Crew first impressions

In Void Crew players take on the role of a spaceship crew, facing dangerous missions, maintaining their vessel, and fighting against hostile alien forces.

Void Crew, developed by Hutlihut Games and published by Focus Entertainment, is a new co-op adventure space sim. Void Crew puts players in a spaceship crew that must embark on challenging missions, maintain their vessel, and fight against hostile alien forces.

The game is an excellent mix of survival and adventure genres. It's a slow starter with not much going on in the first few hours, letting you get a grip on how the game functions and preparing you for the more demanding mechanics later on.

Void Crew draws inspiration from Sea of Thieves in a positive way. Once your ship starts running and you build up a squad, the game pushes you into a run for your money as you and your team go through different types of enemies.

Void Crew gameplay

Void Crew's gameplay consists of players filling different ship-bound roles, such as piloting, manning guns, repairing systems, and managing resources. Besides quick reflexes, challenges require clear communication with crew members, making it highly suitable for running with friends.

Furthermore, the game mixes tactical space combat with exploration as well. It also fuses tactical space combat with exploration in general, where a mission might be everything from heavy fights with aliens to recovering resources and finishing an objective in hostile locations. We found transitions from piloting the ship to on-foot running inside to repair or upgrade systems really smooth and engaging.

Game mechanics

A team in Void Crew is divided into four classes, namely Pilot, Engineer, Gunner and Scavenger. As the names of the roles suggest, the Pilot is responsible for flying the ship, the Engineer is responsible for keeping the ship and its system in shape, the Gunner controls the attacking systems, and the Scavenger goes out into space to collect and scavenge different essential materials.

The second important thing in Void Crew is your ship. The ship contains almost everything needed throughout the duration of the game. The devs have managed to make the ship actually stand out as an essential part of the player experience.

However, as a beginner, the ship's buttons might seem a little confusing, but once you get the hang of it, you'll feel right at home.

In the initial release phase, the ship in Void Crew feels a little clunky. However, with subsequent and continuous updates, the ship might become the best feature the game has to offer.

The classes in the game tie in with the ship perfectly; however, the Scavenger role seems like a letdown as you only get access to a grappling hook, limiting gameplay options. But the class option won't limit you from doing different things in the game.

Visual and audio design

Regarding the game's graphics and audio, Void Crew certainly does not disappoint. The spaceship interiors are highly detailed, while outer space is filled with stunning visuals, from asteroid fields to looming alien spaceships.

To complement it all is a stunning sound design with cool sound effects for explosions, laser fire, and ship mechanics. Moreover, this game seems to be replayable thanks to its modular mission system and customisable features in every ship.

Final thoughts

At the end of it all, we can say that Void Crew is shaping up to be an exciting addition to the co-op multiplayer genre. The combination of exciting space battles, teamwork-based mechanics, and visually striking environments promises a fun-filled experience for those enjoying cooperative games.
