Lies of P has lots and lots of different craftable and noncraftable materials, throwables and consumables that it might be difficult to keep track of what all of them do.
Most of them are used for leveling up your weapons, removing status effects or giving you free ergo but the one item that is a little different from those items is Quartz you obtain from beating side quest bosses and some main bosses as well.
What is Quartz?
"There is a special kind of Ergo with different colour and vibration. The workshop uses this gem to bring out puppets' different abilities."
So what exactly is Quartz? Quartz is, by purpose, a P-Organ ability activation part that can activate a special ability once equipped or attached to a P-Organ. The ability can be whatever the player chooses to invest in.
For those who don't know what P-Organs are, they are different skill trees you can invest in that can focus on Pinocchio's attack types, defenses and a few other attributes.
Quartz can be obtained from mini bosses and regular bosses once they have been beaten. The mini bosses and regular bosses will always drop only one piece of quartz and the quartz cannot be consumed or spent outside of Guisseppe's office, more specifically the body modification machine that sits in his office.
Additionally, you cannot use the same type of quartz for the same stage in the skill tree so we advise you to hold onto the quartz for a little while until you progress into the game
