I still had to check twice to make sure my eyes aren't deceiving me but it's true alright - the mighty gods of mount Sonympus have finally decided to allow for Fortnite cross-play on PlayStation 4 and the beta is actually starting today.
The news was just announced by president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment John Kodera via the PlayStation blog, where he said that the company "has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content".
He pointed out that implementing Fortnite's cross-play required a comprehensive evaluation and thanked PS4 players for their patience as they "navigated through this issue to find a solution". Although this sounds as if they crossed seven seas and fought Sauron to make it happen, we're pretty happy campers at the moment so we'll let it slide.
So, Fortnite's PS4 cross-play beta starts today and includes cross-platform gameplay, progression and commerce on PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC and Mac. The beta will serve as basis for fine tuning of Fortnite's gameplay, performance and social features.
The company pointed out that they pride themselves in keeping a closed platform for 24 years, or "a uniquely PlayStation perspective" as they put it. However, they came to their senses after seeing that Fortnite's cross-play isn't something they should be ignoring, for own and their players' sake.
"We have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform." I had to copy paste that because we wouldn't believe our own paraphrasing had we not heard it from the horse's mouth.
The move is just in time for Fortnite's Season 6 but it is special for more than just cross-play. It seems to indicate that Sony and Nintendo are finally ready to bury the hatchet, after a passive-aggressive period that put the Elves-Dwarves hatred to shame. They said that they'll keep the community informed on more specifics, including what "this means for other titles going forward".
Could we see Minecraft next and and Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo surviving together?
