Samson will release on April 8 on PC, and its developers Liquid Swords have shared another trailer. The gameplay preview shows off some of the title’s combat as well as narrative focus.
Samson drops players into an open world environment where quick reflexes and tough choices will be the key to success or failure. Samson seems to take inspiration from other action-adventure games with its blend of narrative weight and gun-fu gameplay.
The story starts with our titular protagonist already down on his luck. Samson needs to pay back a loan to some local mobsters, or else faces dire consequences.
If he doesn’t make payments on time, his sister’s life is forfeit. It’s a classic “high stakes” setup that’ll have players feeling the pressure.
Combat and Gameplay
While guns are featured in Samson, much of the gameplay revolves around melee combat. Sword swinging and brawling have you fighting for your life against the enemy onslaught.
Chases and vehicular gameplay are sprinkled in for some variety. Overall, Samson seems to focus on surviving day to day as you fight to turn your luck around.
Tyndalston, the city you find yourself in, doesn’t seem to be kind to you. Unlike typical open-world action games, you will not constantly be growing stronger. You could very well fail at any time.
Samson appears to trade the fantastical elements of similar games for something more grounded and stressful.
Platforms
Samson will launch for PC. There is currently no console release, though nothing has been ruled out moving forward.
