Udyr VGU was always going to be obviously problematic since the devs would have to work on a champion with four different stances and no ultimate, which got only worse with the Spirit Guard Udyr due to additional models that needed changing. Sprinkle in some troubles with voicing the character and you get a ton of work for the VGU team. That didn't stop them from providing a glimpse into their work though.
The VGU team decided they want to preserve four basic traits of Udyr:
- He has to keep stance changing gameplay with no ulti,
- He has no ranged abilities or skill shots, leaving him pure melee
- He can adapt to tank or deal more damage based on the build
- He changes gameplay based on the stance he maxes out
To continue working on Udyr's kit with all the aforementioned requirements, the team brainstormed several ideas but so far it appears that the "super stance" concept shows the most promise.
The term refers to letting Udyr cast a stance a second time in order to activate its overcharged form but it would be limited by a cooldown so he couldn't just shift from one super stance to another.
On the other hand, the super stance approach became problematic since it would run counter to some intuitive utilisation of Udyr by disrupting the fluid stance dancing. However, the super stance moments proved to have much higher impact than regular stances, solving one of the biggest design problems the team had.
It remains to be seen if this concept will be implemented - even though it shows the most promise, everything is still subject to change due to the update still being early in development.
