Sony has today released a new PlayStation 5 system software update 25.06-12.02.00. This fresh firmware update can be downloaded by PS5 users starting from today, October 1, 2025.
The latest software update from Sony is a minor one, however, and contains no new features. We haven’t even been given a release note on what’s new, as the update doesn’t make any alterations to the PS5 dashboard. In fact, Sony has been clear to state that this software update is focused on security improvements.
The security patch and system software update from Sony is likely to plug some holes in the PS5’s operating system, although the company is yet to say what is fixed. Software patches like these are a routine feature of the PS5, of course, and it’s good to see that Sony continues to back its console now five years into its life.

Sony rarely comment on specifics when it comes to security fixes. That’s likely to remain the case since disclosing that information can result in even more exploits in the wild. Still, these minor patch releases are just as important as the more prominent, feature-packed firmware releases.
Games updates can maintain the console’s long-term performance, but system software updates like this one are necessary to secure the PS5 against potential attacks and vulnerabilities.
As the popularity of the console continues to grow, it’s safe to say that players need all the protection they can get. By all measures, the PS5 is a locked down console. It’s not unheard of for firmware updates to give away information about security and exploit fixes either.
As previously stated, it took just a couple of years for the homebrew community to crack open the PS4. The PS5, on the other hand, has gone almost five years without a single popular exploit in the wild. Sony’s consistent firmware updates, in addition to its stable, more locked-down environment likely have a lot to do with this.
