PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds sold over 1 million copies since its Early Access launch on 23 May 2017, making $11 million in the first 3 days alone. The creators have promised the game will see a full release in 6 months.

The Korean developer Bluehole have announced the sales milestone today. The game has also been streamed close to 30,000 times since its release. Combined with a peak concurrent user count of almost 90,000 players, and you have a surprise hit game.

Brendan Greene (aka PlayerUnknown) along with Bluehole Studio have boasted about their plans to have the game out of Early Access as a full release within six months. They will then probably proceed to feed the hungry, shelter the poor and make world peace a reality. Jokes aside, this is quite a statement as a lot of games get bogged down in one sort of beta or another for years, and some of them never see an actual release. Steam's womb is a warm and comfortable place and developing a game is quite a complicated and unpredictable process.

If PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has anything going for it at this stage, that would at least be money. I've fired up the AltChar super computer we usually use to predict the outcome of eSports tournaments and plugged in some numbers. One million sales, times roughly £25 a pop equals to about £25,000,000 in real money. Yeah, even our supercomputer annotated the results with "THAT IS A LOT OF MONEY IN 3 WEEKS, MASTER".

If the steady rise in popularity of this type of game, ever since the early days of DayZ, is anything to go by - then it looks like Battle Royale style games and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds in particular are here to stay.
