New VR headset by HTC won't need a PC or a phone to work

The HTC Vive family is about to get a new member. The HTC Vive standalone VR headset will not require any additional devices to give its users a taste of some other reality.

HTC just recently announced a new standalone VR headset. The headset will be a part of the company’s Vive line and all of the required machinery will be situated inside the headset itself. 

It's described as "the world's most immersive VR without the cables. The revolutionary standalone VR headset that delivers unparalleled VR experience." The device will be easy to carry and use as you will be untethered from those pesky smartphones and PCs.

You'll be so untethered, in fact, that you're free to bump your head and the headset on it against any wall you stumble upon. Just kidding, the device comes equipped with its own room-mapping smarts packed in.

Additionally, it will have "Precise movement tracking. Lean, dodge and duck as you wish". Just make sure you have a friend nearby with a camera at the ready. 

The current HTC Vive can't work without the sizable headset linked to a powerful PC. The new headset is similar to Samsung's Gear VR and Google's Daydream View, but instead of sliding your phone into the slot, you'll have a built-in screen.

The HTC Vive standalone is not aimed solely at the gamers of the world either. HTC said in a blog post: "From storytellers and manufacturers to doctors and teachers, VR is impacting every part of society and sparking imagination like never before".

This will be the first standalone device to use Google's Daydream platform.

HTC Vive standalone still has no set release date, but the company is eyeing the end of 2017. Put it on your Christmas list now, just in case.
