According to the report in the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo plan to release two new Switch models as early as this summer. One version will have new, enhanced features but still won't be strong as PlayStation 4 Pro or Xbox One X.

Japanese gaming giant Nintendo are looking to pick up the pace and close the gap to Sony's and Microsoft's flagship consoles with two new versions of Nintendo Switch.

According to New York City-based daily newspaper the Wall Street Journal, if everything goes as planned it's possible that Nintendo release both versions "as early as this summer".

Of course, this is the best case scenario, and it's possible that the release date gets pushed back a bit, but 2019 should be the launch year for the new products.

One console version will have new, enhanced features targeted at avid gamers, although it won't be as power Sony's PlayStation 4 Pro or the world's most powerful console - Microsoft's Xbox One X.

The report in the Wall Street Journal states that this info comes directly from Nintendo's parts supplier and software developers who have access to a prototype of the machine.

As for the second model, it will be a cheaper version for casual gamers that "Nintendo sees as a successor to its ageing hand-held 3DS device".

"You would be wrong to think the enhanced version is similar to what Sony did with PS4 Pro and the other is just a cheap alternative that looks very similar to some past hand-held machines, say, Sony’s PlayStation Vita,” a source told The Wall Street Journal.

The report claims that Nintendo plan to cut costs of the cheaper model by removing some of the features, with vibration specifically cited.

The Wall Street Journal say that announcement for both versions is expected at this year's E3 expo, starting on 11 June 2019, with the launch date coming "a few months later" in time for the release of new games such as Pokemon Sword & Shield and Animal Crossing.

It looks like E3 2019 will be packed with new console reveals as Microsoft is also expected to reveal new hardware at the expo. As for Sony, the company pulled out from this year's E3 but could have their own show like EA does with EA Play or Nintendo with Nintendo Direct.
