2K have announced the cover athlete for the ultimate version of NBA 2K21, called the Mamba Forever Edition. A fitting name for the legendary player that is Kobe Bryant who will once again be honoured by 2K as the cover star of this edition.

After announcing Damian Lillard as the NBA 2K21 cover athlete for current-gen platforms and Zion Williamson as the face of next-gen, 2K have now officially revealed the cover star for the ultimate edition of their basketball title.

Called the Mamba Forever Edition, this version of NBA 2K21 will feature none other than the legendary Kobe Bryant as the cover athlete. This will replace the previously titled Legend Edition so as to celebrate Kobe Bryant's incredible legacy and monumental success in the NBA.

The five-time NBA champion, 18-time NBA All-Star, two-time NBA Finals MVP, 2008 NBA MVP, 2008 and 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist and the owner of numerous other accolades and awards was featured on the cover of NBA 2K10 and the Legend Edition of NBA 2K17, and it is only right that this iconic player becomes immortalized once more as the face of NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever Edition.

NBA 2K21 will come in two versions for both current and next-gen platforms: standard and Mamba Forever Edition. Purchasing the latter on either generation of platforms will net you a free copy of the standard edition of the game on the other generation, within the same platform family.

In other words, if you buy the Mamba Forever Edition on the PS4, you will get the standard edition of the game for free on PlayStation 5 - same goes for the Xbox family of consoles.

The next-gen version of the game will be built from scratch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, however, the publisher has announced that certain features are going to be included in the so called cross-progression.

Namely, NBA 2K21's MyTEAM Points, Tokens, cards and progress will be transferred from current to next-gen within the same console family.

Furthermore, another feature called Shared VC Wallet will allow any earned or purchased VC (virtual currency) to be accessible across both current and next-gen versions of the game in the same platform tree.

Speaking about NBA 2K21, the president of Visual Concepts, Greg Thomas, had this to say: "NBA 2K21 is a monumental leap forward for the franchise. We're combining all of our experience and development expertise to craft the best game possible and for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, we are building the game from the ground up to take full advantage of next-gen power and technology."

Alfie Brody, the Vice President of Global Marketing at NBA 2K, stated that: "Each of our cover athletes represent different eras of the game of basketball - Damian Lillard dominates the court today, Zion Williamson is a standard bearer for the next generation of NBA superstar and what more could be said about Kobe? Three athletes representing the current, future and storied history of the game. Today's exciting announcement is just the first of many for NBA 2K21; it’s going to be a huge year for basketball fans and NBA 2K gamers."
