Let's be honest here, if someone asked you what's Sony's most successful franchise, it would've probably been something along the lines of God of War. Sony's numbers, however, tell another story and it turns out it's actually Gran Turismo.
It turns out that Gran Turismo amassed 80.4 million copies sold over the course of its 21 year career. The franchise spanned seven games in total, two per PlayStation generation except for PlayStation 4, whose Gran Turismo: Sport launched in October 2017.
The first Gran Turismo came out for the original PlayStation back in 1997 so we're looking at one of the oldest horses in Sony's stable. Indeed, at the time the franchise was widely regarded to be synonymous with racing games.
Not to make it seem as if its days are over, Gran Turismo: Sport's numbers are encouraging as well. The game topped physical sales charts on the week it launched and has reportedly sold from 3.5 to 4 million units so far.
Additionally, it consistently outsold its Xbox competitor Forza Motorsport 7. We know we shouldn't compare the two, we just can't resist a good conversation starter. Music to our ears.
It's pretty interesting though, seeing Gran Turismo win the in-house contest, seeing as how everyone's first guess would've surely been elsewhere. With Sony's repertoire listing such names as God of War, Uncharted, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, etc. it's a worthy achievement.
Having been old enough to remember Gran Turismo's beginnings, I was quite sceptical of the new direction Sony has been taking Gran Turismo: Sport but it seems like the franchise will be more than fine. One of the game's updates thankfully brought back the singleplayer campaign that its predecessors were notable for, so it's still the same old Turismo.

Sony indeed have quite a few gems on their hands, with God of War recently becoming the . Horizon: Zero Dawn has racked up a nice figure of , although we're still looking at a single game. For the time being, of course.
