Another week and another free game from the Epic Games Store. Having launched back in 2012, Fez is not definitely not a newcomer, but if you haven't tried it so far, you've got some great fun coming your way thanks to Polytron and Epic.
Developed by Polytron Corporation and published by Trapdoor, Fez is one of those rare games whose cuteness doesn't mean you'll have an easy time ploughing through the pixelated world.
One of the game's selling points was exactly its strange world, whose obvious 2D-ness didn't prevent Polytron to quirk-it-up with some mind-bending, perspective-shifting 3D.
In fact, Fez's third dimension, or the denizens' absolute faith in non-existence thereof, is part of the narrative as well, and the game's description reads, "Gomez is a 2D creature living in a 2D world. Or is he? When the existence of a mysterious 3rd dimension is revealed to him, Gomez is sent out on a journey that will take him to the very end of time and space."
Needless to say, Fez's 3D perspective rotation infuses some much-needed freshness into the game, although the game isn't lacking in any respect - graphics, wonderful soundtrack, inventive and quirky mechanics - you name it, and Fez has probably got it.
For all the pixelated looks, Fez is without a doubt a platforming masterpiece, and is as much a modern game as it is a throwback to platformer games of old, sprinkled with some JRPG-ish narrative delivery.
So, in case you haven't set yourself any ethical obstacles to downloading another launcher, make sure to give Fez a spin, as it's more than worth it, not to mention free.
Fez will be available for free from the Epic Games Store until 29 August 2019, when it will be replaced by a double freebie offer - Celeste and Inside.
Both of the next week's games are platformers, although, as you'll see for yourself, quite different in their own right, but equally as worth a shot. Yeah, not to mention they're free.
