The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced that Epic Games will be given a Special Award at their upcoming event. The Award is given out for their achievements with Unreal Engine and excellence in technology.
Epic will receive the award on BAFTA's event at E3, more precisely on 12 June 2019.
BAFTA reminded that since Epic's been founded in 1991, they have become "world-renowned industry leader and innovator", with Gears of War and Fortnite being the most obvious highlights.
"Its pioneering Unreal Engine, founded twenty years ago, has underpinned some of the most successful and critically acclaimed games, including BAFTA-winning titles Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, What Remains of Edith Finch, Rocket League, Mass Effect, BioShock and the Arkham series", BAFTA wrote.
Also mentioned was Epic's championing of the developer community and Dr Jo Twist OBE, Chair of BAFTA's Games Committee that development teams and projects of various sizes have gone on to win BAFTA awards themselves using Unreal Engine 4 through the years.
"Epic is at the forefront of the evolution of the global games industry and the impact of their innovation is undeniable", he added.
Epic's CEO Tim Sweeney thanked BAFTA for the award and said, "All of us at Epic Games are honored that BAFTA has awarded Unreal Engine for excellence in technology, and we share this recognition with our partners and the creative community."
The list of BAFTA Special Award recipients includes Nolan North, Riot Games, Brenda Romero, Amy Hennig and Markus Persson, and Epic are indeed joining quite an illustrious company.
As you'd expect, joke questions are already flying, like "how much did Epic fork out for this exclusivity deal?", and as funny as they are, they're a bit misplaced in this case, because we're talking about Unreal Engine 4 and not Epic's Store.
Speaking of Unreal Engine 4, Epic have recently announced that they've acquired the and made it free for everyone until November 2019, although you still get to keep and use it indefinitely, just like the engine itself.
