It looks like DICE are cooking something pretty special for Battlefield 2042's Hazard Zone, which they describe as something that will "move the battle royale concept on in a way only Battlefield can."
Battlefield 2042 won't have your classic battle royale mode like Firestorm but DICE and other EA studios are currently working on something that should scratch that battle royale itch for many Battlefield fans.
Named Hazard Zone, this mode is very different from the revealed All-Out Warfare. EA describe it as "an all-new, high-stakes, squad-based game type that is a modern take on the multiplayer experience".
In the most recent preview of Battlefield 2042 by the Play gaming magazine , it's also revealed that Hazard Mode "will move the battle royale concept on in a way only Battlefield can". Play speculate that this could mean multiple mini battle royales playing simultaneously, basically a squad-based royale.
This is certainly possible but we've heard before from industry insiders that Hazard Zone is Battlefield 2042's take on Escape From Tarkov , where players are given an extraction point and must fight their way to reach it in order to escape. There's also plenty of loot to be found but if you fail to reach the extraction point, you'll lose everything, including loot and the equipment they brought into the raid.
It's certainly an interesting concept that could suit Battlefield more than the classic battle royale.
Battlefield 2042 is officially hitting the shelves on October 22, 2021, for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
