We live in a great time where the single player component in shooter games has to be announced as a feature, thanks in no small part to Call of Duty Black Ops 4's recent announcement. Battlefield V will have it, although not as a campaign.
The Battlefield and Call of Duty franchises have always been closely intertwined due to being direct competitors, and when Call of Duty prepared to board the battle royale train while ditching single-player in the process, everyone started wondering if Battlefield will do the same.
Well, as it turns out, this is not going to be the case. Captain loot box, otherwise known as EA's CEO Andrew Wilson has stated that the next Battlefield will work on "bringing the intensity of combat to life in new and unexpected ways" followed by a claim that every battle is unique and every mode will bring its own challenges. Both these claims are just the generic PR gibberish, promising the obvious reasons Battlefield has already been popular for even before, as replay value wouldn't really be high in a game without intense combat and situations that feel unique.
The interesting part was Wilson's followup though, where he noted that the game will also have "compelling single-player stories" and the "next level of large-scale multiplayer that spans across multiple maps and modes". These "compelling single-player stories" confirmed the game will not be restricted to multiplayer and hinted that the campaign mode as we know it may not be present in the game. Several stories could be told in smaller excerpts, but there was no further indication on whether they will be connected, standalone or DLC.
Considering that Battlefield is widely known for its large scale battles, it would be the prime candidate for a battle royale entry. Still, instead of ditching single-player in order to focus on the current battle royale craze, Battlefield V is going to stick with single-player stories that resemble the model Battlefield 1 embraced by telling six smaller stories.
It would be fairly easy to implement battle royale into Battlefield universe though, since large scale battles on massive maps with vehicles are already in the game, all it would take is to remove the team tags and let be a free-for-all. Who knows, we might get both battle royale and single-player.
