Anniversary celebration in Honkai Impact 3rd turned dark after controversy and a subsequent assassination attempt on MiHoYo founders, right on their doorstep.
Honkai Impact 3rd recently celebrated the third anniversary of the global version launch by adding skins for the characters, themed after bunny suits that are usually seen in casinos. Depending on where you look, the problems arose due to either one of two reasons:
- players from the Chinese server being dissatisfied they didn't get the same treatment or
- this was the tipping point for a long-running dissatisfaction from Chinese fans
Either way, MiHoYo apologised publicly and either removed or went for adjusting the content added for the celebration. Furthermore, they issued compensations for both global and Chinese players.
Apparently, that was not to be the end of the saga as MiHoYo founders were attacked on April 24, 2021. The assailant was reportedly armed with a knife but was arrested at the company's HQ before they could harm anyone.
While being dissatisfied with a game or feeling left out are both valid reasons for controversy or ending support for the title, company, or both, it is no basis for murder.
In case you are curious about the infamous bunny suits and wondering if they were worth all the ruckus, you can check them out on the promotional video below, which was preserved by 3rd party re-uploads.
