Marvel Rivals is a new 6v6 third-person hero shooter from NetEase Games in collaboration with Disney's Marvel Games. It is a free-to-play title available across all current generation platforms. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the game launched with eight original maps based on iconic landmarks seen in Marvel movies and comics.
NetEase Games has launched the game with 33 characters in the roster, with each character being popular figures from different Marvel comics and media. To keep their gameplay loop fresh and the character pool in a balanced state, NetEase Games has introduced Team-Ups. Here's a look at how these team-up combinations work in Marvel Rivals.
What are Team-Up Combinations in Marvel Rivals?
Team-ups are a special feature that is activated when certain characters are played together. For instance, the Fastball Special is activated when Hulk and Wolverine are on at the same time. Once activated, Hulk can throw Wolverine in a trajectory for attacking or better positioning depending on what the game calls for.
The team-up abilities can quickly turn around a game if used properly. Moreover, this new feature also pushes for better teamwork and role choices, where players might get encouraged to play certain roles like tanks and healers.
All Team-Up Combinations in Marvel Rivals
- Arcane Order
- Characters: Doctor Strange, Magik, and Scarlet Witch
- Ability: With Doctor Strange as anchor, when Magik is on the same team, she will get the Chain of Cyttorak ability, which allows her to tie two opponents together while damaging them. Similarly, if Scarlet Witch is on the same team, she will get the Sorcery Surge instead of her Chthonian Burst ability.
- Allied Agents
- Characters: Hawkeye and Black Widow
- Ability: When Hawkeye and Black Widow are in the same team, Black Widow gets access to Hawkeye's ultimate
- Atlas Bond
- Characters: Iron Fist and Luna Snow
- Ability: When Iron Fist and Luna Snow are on the same team, Iron Fist's Chi of Shou-Lao can be channelled to Luna Snow to give her the extra power of freezing enemies in a place
- ESU Alumnus (Removed in Season 3)
- Characters: Spider-Man and Squirrel Girl
- Ability: When Spider-Man and Squirrel Girl are in the same team, Spider-Man allows Squirrel Girl to use his web bombs, which can help her stop other characters in their place
- Ever-Burning Bond
- Characters: Human Torch and Spider-Man
- Ability: When Human Torch and Spider-Man are in the same team, Spider-Man unlocks the new Inferno Blast ability
- Fantastic Four
- Characters: Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman
- Ability: When Mister Fantatic and Invisible Woman are on the same team, Invisible Woman gives damage resistance and continuous health regeneration abilities to Mister Fantastic.
- Fastball Special
- Characters: Bruce Banner and Wolverine
- Ability: When Bruce Banner and Wolverine are in the same team, Bruce Banner can pick up Wolverine and throw him to a further distance for more damage on impact
- First Steps
- Characters: Human Torch and The Thing
- Ability: When Human Torch and The Thing are on the same team, Johnny, the team-up anchor, can lift The Thing into the air. Then, at the perfect moment, hurl Ben to the ground, dealing damage, launching enemies, and creating a zone that disables mobility abilities.
- Gamma Charge
- Characters: Bruce Banner, Dr Strange, and Iron Man
- Ability: When Bruce Banner, Dr Strange, and Iron Man are in the same team, Bruce Banner can charge Dr Strange's Maelstrom of Madness and Iron Man's Armor Overdrive with Gamma radiation and these abilities get a damage boost
- Guardian Revival
- Characters: Adam Warlock, Mantis, and Star-Lord
- Ability: When Adam Warlock, Mantis, and Star-Lord are in the same team, Mantis and Star-Lord can revive themselves after their death by using Adam Warlock's cocoon ability
- Lunar Force
- Characters: Cloak & Dagger, Moon Knight, and Blade
- Ability: When Cloak & Dagger and Moon Knight are on the same team, Moon Knight can turn invisible by using the power of the Light & Dark Realm passed on from Cloak & Dagger. When Blade is on the same team as Cloak & Dagger, he gets the same invisibility ability with a dash forward attack.
- Metallic Chaos
- Characters: Scarlet Witch and Magneto
- Ability: When Scarlet Witch and Magneto are in the same team, Magneto's blade gets enchanted by Chaos Energy, allowing Magneto to deal more damage with each strike
- Planet X Pals
- Characters: Groot, Rocket, and Jeff
- Ability: When Groot, Rocket, and Jeff are in the same team, Rocket and Jeff can ride on Groot's back for dealing additional damage or easily healing other team members in the vicinity
- Primal Flame
- Characters: Phoenix and Wolverine
- Ability: When Phoenix and Wolverine are in the same team, Wolverine gains the new Phoenix Warrior ability
- Ragnarok Rebirth
- Characters: Hela, Loki, and Thor
- Ability: When Hela, Loki, and Thor are in the same team, if Hela lands a final hit, Thor and Loki get a health boost or get revived instantly if they are awaiting to respawn
- Voltaic Union
- Characters: Thor, Storm, and Captain America
- Ability: When Thor, Storm, and Captain America are in the same team, Thor gives electrical abilities to Storm and Captain America
The team-up combinations can help you turn around the tide of a match if used properly. This unique feature allows players to play creatively, limiting the same repetitive gameplay loop seen in most hero shooters. More team-ups will be added to the game once other characters are added to the roster of the game.
