Naught Dog have confirmed during E3 that multiplayer will return to The Last of Us Part 2, putting many worried fans' questions to rest. While Factions was confirmed, Naughty Dog didn't clarify how many modes will be available from day one
Thankfully there is no battle royale in sight for The Last of Us meaning the developers probably focused on what is actually important in a story driven RPG - the single player experience. On the other hand, fans won't be deprived of multiplayer either as Anthony Newman, the co-director of the game, confirmed that the Factions will make a return.
In an interview with GameSpot, Kurt Margenau the other co-director, noted that they're not ready to talk on which form the multiplayer portion might take. This still leaves the option of integrating a battle royale component but if that were the case, Naughty Dog would jump at the opportunity to announce it at E3 like everyone else did.
That said, the original The Last of Us featured several PvP modes that made positive impressions on the fans but it is unknown at the moments which modes will be making a comeback and which ones will get the boot.
Speaking of things that got booted, many fans were worried Joel was one of them. This will not be the case as Neil Druckmann confirmed that Joel "is somewhere there in Jackson". It is yet unknown why he's not travelling with Ellie, other than the confirmation that she is now a part of the patrols that are keeping Jackson relatively safe.
The Last of Us Part 2 will be set four years after the events of the first game, which is evident by Ellie's both literal and figurative growth.

While The Last of Us focused on portraying Joel's protective father instinct inspired by Ellie, she is now a that is slicing throats, killing cultists and making homemade explosive arrow tips that quite literally blow people up in smithereens.
