Rumour has it that Avalanche Software (not to be confused with Just Cause franchise's developer Avalanche Game Studios), is working on a new Harry Potter game, and we're talking about a AAA offering here.
Source of the rumour is formerly Kotaku's and now Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, so we suppose we can already classify it as news. He's been on quite the streak so we've little reason to doubt his credibility in this matter, but feel free to exercise the grain-of-salt rule if you prefer.
Anyhow, according to his reports, the new Harry Potter game is in development at Avalanche Software's Utah studio. It is a AAA release, which should differentiate it from the previous attempts to turn J. K. Rowling's popular series into a video game.
There's great news for fans of the book series though - Hogwarts and the surrounding area are not only playable - they're part of the open-world design. In other words, you'll be able to explore the parts you've been only able to read about in the books.
In spite of the coronavirus pandemic, the social unrest in the US, and the uncertainty over the future of Warner Bros' vide game publishing business, the new Harry Potter game is said to be on track for release next year.
Granted, it's said to be "late next year", but next year nevertheless. Apparently, it's set to be revealed after DC Fandome, which usually takes place in August.
If you've been following J. K. Rowling and have a negative opinion on some of her latest statements, then you need not worry as she's had very little direct involvement. Some of the studio members apparently haven't taken kindly to her comments, but that does not affect the game in the slightest.
