God of War director Cory Barlog dried off his tears to talk to IGN recently, where he stood in brave defense of singleplayer games. He pointed out that even though he has nothing against more competitive gaming, he prefers the old school.
Barlog reflected on the current battle royale bandwagon led by the usual suspects - Fortnite and PUBG. Mister God of War acknowledged their quality and appeal but stressed that their popularity doesn't mean everything else just goes away.
"Competition doesn't drive me", Barlog said, pointing out that this doesn't mean competition or more competitive games are bad, far from it. However, it's obviously not his thing.
As for his cup of proverbial tea, Barlog said, "I don't want to work on any games that don't have some kind of story component". He added that it's actually one of his main selling points when thinking about making a game, with the last God of War perhaps being most notable example.
Indeed, the God of War, or as it's often mockingly called the Dad of War, is built around such a complex storyline whose focus on the emotional aspect prompted many players to argue it's not even the Kratos they know and love. Nevertheless, the game has already reached insane levels of popularity, so we guess it's too late anyway.
Barlog doesn't even think the singleplayer vs. multiplayer should be an issue, since none of them will be leaving any time soon. He even mentioned Schrodinger's confused cats, trying to draw a comparison between both aspects of gaming simultaneously being there and not being there.
Sony Interactive Entertainment
Kratos' new gig has really rocked PlayStation 4's world and the game even became the ever, outgunning the likes of Horizon: Zero Dawn and the previous record holder, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.
If there ever was a shred of doubt that Kratos and God of War will be leaving singleplayer waters for good, then it's time to set them aside. Also, forgive our occasional pun for Barlog's crying, it was just so endearing that we can't stop picking at it.
