The studio behind the globally popular MMO Genshin Impact has revealed its brand new ambitious project: a realistic fantasy MMO built on Unreal Engine 5. HoYoverse shared the first teaser via social media, showcasing breathtaking environmental art with massive, tree-like structures dominating the landscape.
What We Know About HoYoverse's New MMO
So far, HoYoverse have confirmed just a couple of details about the game, which is currently untitled. Players will explore an open-world environment with MMO functionality, supporting what appears to be large-scale multiplayer interactions. PvP combat is confirmed, alongside boss fight encounters.
One intriguing detail is the promise of "intellectual NPCs" - suggesting advanced AI-driven characters that respond dynamically to player actions, potentially elevating quest design beyond traditional fetch-and-kill routines that plague most MMORPGs.
Whether this means genuinely sophisticated NPC behaviour or simply more reactive dialogue trees remains to be seen, but it's certainly an ambitious claim from a studio.
Unreal Engine 5 - Blessing And a Curse?
The game runs on Unreal Engine 5 which suggests photorealistic graphics and advanced lighting system like Lumen. The teaser's environmental artwork certainly showcases UE5's capabilities, with intricate geological formations and atmospheric effects that wouldn't look out of place in a high-budget film production.
UE5 adoption does raise performance questions - many recent UE5 titles have struggled with optimisation, particularly regarding shader compilation stuttering and inconsistent frame rates. However, Arc Raiders recently demonstrated that properly optimised UE5 games can deliver exceptional visual quality without sacrificing performance. Hopefully, HoYoverse dedicates enough resources for technical polish.
For now, fantasy MMO enthusiasts will need patience. But with HoYoverse's proven track record and clearly ambitious vision, this unnamed project deserves attention as it develops.
Release Date and Development Timeline
HoYoverse hasn't provided any release window, platform information, or even an official title. This appears to be an extremely early teaser designed to simply gauge player interest rather than signal something imminent. Given the complexity of building an open-world MMO from scratch, players shouldn't expect this project anytime soon. It's likely years away from playable beta testing, let alone full release.
Can HoYoverse Deliver Another Mega-Hit?
If any developer can successfully launch a new live-service fantasy game, it's HoYoverse. Genshin Impact became one of the biggest games globally, generating billions in revenue whilst maintaining passionate player communities years after launch. The studio clearly understands free-to-play monetisation, consistent content updates, and building worlds players actually want to inhabit long-term.
My bet is that they will successefuly translate that to their realistic fantasy MMO, which I'm personally very excited about. Genshin was never my thing due to art style and general anime vibe.
