Thursdays are time for Epic's weekly freebie rotations and today's game is Cave Story, a delightful Metroidvania from 2004. Next week, however - it's a roleplaying overload.
Cave Story wasn't a AAA blockbuster or anything - it was a 2D metroidvania with a whimsical world and colourful protagonist. The quality eventually earned the game much deserved popularity, which is even more appropriate considering it's just one guy that built it.
If you're a fan of one-man-army development teams like Eric ConcernedApe Barone, Lucas Pople, and our favourite as of late Tomas Sala, then Cave Story should be well worth checking out, if nothing then for academic purposes.
RPG fans brace yourselves - next week's freebie round from Sweeney and Co is all about Obsidian, US strategy and RPG specialist, pretty renowned for more than one reason.
Anyhow, first up is Tyranny, which was announced and launched in 2016 to great reception. It just so happens that Chris Avellone was working on its early development, which is usually a good sign.
If you've dabbled in Pillars of Eternity, you should know that Tyranny is very much its successor in all things but the story. Which is not to say that its story is lacking - quite the contrary.
Stemming from Obsidian's head honcho Fergus Urquhart's obsession with the idea of a magical apocalypse that ravages the landscape, in which evil wins, Tyranny's tale of development is a long one.
The second Epic freebie is Pillars of Eternity: Definitive Edition, which spruces up the classic for the new age of graphics and mechanics. If the Steam edition is correct, the package will come with Deadfire Pack, Royal Edition Upgrade Pack, and The White March Part I and II.
