2016 was a good year for games and gamers; AltChar is never idle in the face of quality fun - here is what we enjoyed in the past year

The AltChar Cabal has many faces and our unblinking gaze never ignores games when launch-hype dies down. 2016 gave us Overwatch, Dark Souls III, Doom, Civilization VI, Pokemon GO, Mafia III and generally more hits than anyone can keep track of whilst retaining any semblance of sanity. The mobile games market mushroom cloud continued to rise towards the heavens and the indie scene has never delivered more polished or intriguing titles.

Here is what the AltChar gaming machines were busy with over the course of this phenomenal year:

The Witcher 3 The Witcher 3

The Witcher 3 - Best story I've ever seen in a game. Remarkably vivid characters that truly make you care about what happens throughout the game.

Destiny - Amazing fast-paced shooter with an exciting multiplayer mode both in PvE and PvP. Despite the lack of a proper storyline, the game is absolutely rich with content.

Heavy Messing

2K Games Civilization VI Civilization VI

Civilization VI: Too afraid to get stuck into it properly again, because RL.

Fallout 4 - Ridiculous amount of detail, story telling and creativity on display. Year on still as interesting as it was then, enjoying taking time to finish.

PlayDead Inside Inside

Inside - A worthy successor to Limbo, creative puzzles and good pacing. Gorgeous, monochromatic style.

Ori and the Blind Forest - Every single scene is like a painting. Metroidvania-type adventure with a beautiful story.

Obsidian Entertainment Poster art for Tyranny, an RPG game by Obsidian Entertainment Tyranny

Tyranny - The combat might be a mess, but Obsidian games are rarely about punching things in the face. Brilliant story telling and a unique take on 'moral choice'.

Planetside 2 - There still isn't anything quite like it out there. A truly massive MMOFPS. For Vanu!

RSI Star Citizen Star Citizen

Star Citizen - Some parts look great, some parts play pretty well, but there's a whole lot more not there yet and just out of reach. If you are aware of what is planned, combined with what you can see so far, you are left with the potential of greatness.

World of Tanks - Wargaming's PVP game shows little sign of losing popularity - and recent graphics upgrades mean it's looking better than ever.

CampoSanto Firewatch Firewatch

Firewatch - A slow-paced but enchanting mystery that pitches you into a beautifully depicted Wyoming National Park with a mystery to solve and only a voice on the end of a radio to communicate with. Slow and intriguing, and reminds you why voice acting is so important to good story-telling.

Alien: Isolation - Late to the game in picking this one up a year or more after launch, a superb all-content deal that packaged all DLC made it an easy buy in a sale. And boy was I glad. Excruciatingly tense, nerve-jangling, and outright scary, it’s everything an Alien-derived experience should be. Feels odd to call it a ‘game’ - psychological pressure chamber seems more apt.
