About a decade ago, the landscape was more favourable, with titles like Metal Gear Solid and the Splinter Cell series vying for the title of top stealth games. However, in recent years, the prevalence of microtransactions and monetization methods hasn't incentivized developers to invest in creating such games. This has left fans feeling disappointed and frustrated.
Fortunately for all enthusiasts of the genre, Ereban: Shadow Legacy emerges as a true stealth game that fills a void we didn't even realise existed amidst the drought of genre titles. While not an AAA, more like an indie endeavour, it still proves substantial enough to satisfy the craving for such experiences until brighter days for stealth gaming arrive.
Story
While the stealth mechanics stand out as the most captivating aspect of Ereban: Shadow Legacy, it's the compelling narrative that truly leaves a lasting impression on players who choose to delve into this exceptional indie title.
The story is brimming with twists, enigmas, and conspiracies, pitting you against an evil corporation in a battle to save the world—everything you'd anticipate from a genuine sci-fi tale. Embark on an adventure alongside Ayana, a young woman thrust into a sudden job competition in Helios, the planet Kelphi's largest corporation, searching for a new agent from the nation she belongs to. The gripping storyline will undoubtedly captivate you, ensuring you'll finish the game in a single sitting.
Following the near-total disappearance of her people, Ayana becomes consumed by curiosity about their fate, swiftly transforming the narrative into a quest for answers. Upon uncovering the true purpose behind her recruitment, she harnesses her powers to flee from the clutches of the Helios Corporation, unveiling their concealed agenda—to obliterate the planet for their selfish gains.
The story unfolds in the classic manner of stealth games, structured into chapters—albeit only eight in total, each of which, while not overly lengthy, is intricately crafted. Upon completing each chapter, a new piece of the narrative puzzle is revealed, leaving you irresistibly drawn to continue playing, eager to discover the ultimate conclusion.
Undoubtedly, the quality associated with a double-A production comes with its trade-offs, and in this instance, it's the length of the game. You can expect to complete the entire story within approximately five to six hours. However, throughout this playtime, the captivating narrative ensures that you'll be thoroughly engrossed in the experience.
Another commendable aspect is the inclusion of three different endings to the story. However, the experience of reaching these endings differs from what one might expect, as there's no buildup leading to a specific conclusion at the game's finale. Instead, players are simply presented with the option to choose one of the endings, determining how the game will ultimately conclude.
Gameplay
Ereban: Shadow Legacy remains true to the essence of a genuine stealth game, offering no compromises. Players must adhere to stealth tactics throughout gameplay, as direct confrontations with enemies are not viable options.
The Ereban race possesses unique abilities linked to light. Specifically, when in shadows, they have the power to vanish entirely, shaping the core mechanics of gameplay. Players will navigate using hiding techniques, manipulating shadows, and employing various special tools that add depth and excitement to the gameplay experience.
Ayana's primary weapon is a dagger cleverly hidden inside her sleeve, reminiscent of the hidden blade found in the Assassin's Creed games. However, the only method of dispatching enemies is by approaching them from behind or executing a surprise attack from above. If the enemies spot you, they will grab you, and the game is over. Throughout some later upgrades, you will have the opportunity to escape their grab or use shadow powers to stun them for a period of time and escape.
Shadow powers serve as your primary arsenal, allowing you to seek avenues for evading enemies and frequently remaining undetected. Upon completing each mission, a rating system evaluates your play style, distinguishing between stealthy, ghost-like approaches and more aggressive tactics.
In terms of enemies, the roster is relatively limited, featuring only a handful of variations throughout the game. There are two types of robots, the elimination of which doesn't impact your rating, and human workers. However, killing human workers results in negative points affecting your overall score.
Regarding the missions, you'll primarily pursue the main objectives, although certain levels may also offer optional side missions. Completing these optional tasks can earn you upgrades or new equipment as rewards.
The levels are predominantly linear in design, providing players with considerable freedom of movement and featuring spacious maps. However, there are certain sections where players must follow the predefined path set by the game, limiting alternative routes.
New shadow powers can be acquired by locating special collectibles, adding an exploratory aspect to the game. Similarly, gadgets are obtained using these upgrade points, requiring players to carefully consider where to invest their resources. These gadgets include scanners for identifying hostile positions, shadow mines for disabling enemies, and other similar tools.
A crucial element within this genre is the inclusion of puzzles, particularly considering the platforming aspects of the game. While most puzzles are straightforward, the difficulty escalates towards the end of the game, particularly in a section where precise execution is paramount to overcoming challenging platforming puzzles, resulting in frequent deaths.
One aspect of the gameplay that falls short is the absence of ranged weapons, which feels particularly glaring given the modern setting of the game. Despite encountering enemies armed with ranged weapons, the player's lack of access to such tools is a significant disappointment.
In terms of gameplay, Ereban: Shadow Legacy displayed remarkable potential, yet it ultimately feels incomplete. Introducing additional elements could elevate it into a standout stealth title, no doubt.
Graphics, Sounds and Performance
Right from the start, Ereban: Shadow Legacy captivates you with its visually stunning presentation. Its art style stands out as one of the most beautiful I've encountered in gaming in general.
The game employs the popular cel shading technology, giving both the characters and the environment the appearance of high-quality cartoons. I would say that this graphical choice is a total success.
While we can't discuss photorealism or adhere to the graphical standards seen in modern triple-A titles, the visuals possess a unique charm and undeniable beauty.
The planet Kelphi boasts stunning features such as palm trees, picturesque landscapes, and vast desert expanses, all presented in a refreshingly original manner within the game. Furthermore, the inner levels showcase futuristic designs, resulting in a captivating blend of aesthetics. For the standards of indie titles, game looks more than decent.
The lighting deserves commendation for highlighting the full splendour of the game's aesthetics and effectively showcasing illuminated and shadowed areas. The mechanics of the game hinge precisely on these distinctions. For instance, Ayana's appearance alters when exposed to light versus darkness, fundamentally changing the perception of the world. These mechanics are executed at a commendable level of proficiency.
The PC version offers numerous graphic settings options, and it must be noted that the game looks truly impressive on PC.
While the sound in this game may not particularly impress, it's worth commending the fantastic voice acting. Both the actress who voiced Ayana and the other characters delivered exceptional performances.
However, the sounds tend to feel somewhat unclear and lacklustre. Additionally, the soundtrack failed to make a significant impact and didn't leave a lasting impression on me. Therefore, apart from the fantastic voice acting, I would say that the overall sound presentation is subpar.
Regarding performance, I have no complaints, at least with the PC version. I haven't tested the Xbox version, so I can't speak to its performance. However, on PC, the game runs exceptionally smoothly without any drops or stuttering.
Conclusion
Ereban: Shadow Legacy breathes new life into the stealth genre, filling a void left by the absence of more substantial titles. Its remarkably simple yet effective stealth mechanics will draw you into its addictive gameplay.
Towards the conclusion of the game, a sense of fatigue sets in, accentuated by the absence of more diverse gameplay elements. As the game progresses, its limitations become increasingly noticeable.
However, the charming graphics and engaging storyline will captivate you throughout the entirety of the game. Considering the price of an indie title, the value proposition is certainly in your favour. Ereban: Shadow Legacy promises to entertain, especially for enthusiasts of the stealth genre.
