Steam Sale - "I don't need it"

Steam Winter Sale kicked off the wallet torture madness but also offers an opportunity to get a ton of games for a fraction of a single AAA title's price. We put together a list of 10 or a few more games that are worth the time allocated to them but also cost less than one US dollar.

We found technically more than 10 games that we put on this list but counted many of them as a single title due to some being expansions or sequels. Therefore, the list will contain a total of 23 games under $1 since we didn't want to cheat you out by making a simple top 10 list made of more than one game from the same franchise. There is also an honourable mention at the end, making it a list of 11 IPs in total. Without further ado, let's get into it.

Resident Evil

Capcom's fabled horror survival series has only one entry in the under $1 section during Steam Winter Sale 2019 and it's . Claire Redfield returns once again and players can go through her kind of new adventures for $0.77 / €0.77 / £0.64. Be aware that this game has a ton of DLC that is purchased separately and the story isn't complete without it.

Left 4 Dead

Another zombie pandemic. Keep in mind that this is the first instalment and it's Left 4 Dead 2 that has more players these days. Then again, manages to keep 400 or so concurrent players daily so finding matches shouldn't be too hard. Then again, it can be played with bots and since it's $0.99 / €0.81 / £0.71 you might as well buy copies for your friends and play through the game with them for under $5.

Payday 2

Payday 2 can sometimes be a shoot 'em up along the lines of Left 4 Dead but it's all about armed robberies. The co-op goes up to four players and the game keeps a healthy player base to this day which should minimise the troubles with finding three other partners in crime. You can snatch it for $0.99 / €0.99 / £0.74. It has a lot of paid DLC, some of it story related but also contains a lot of free story DLC.

Portal

Both and are discounted to $0.99 / €0.81 / £0.71. The first game has 97 per cent positive reviews while the sequel has 98 per cent. Easily some of the best puzzle-solving adventures you can get and absolutely the best ones that you can get under $1. The cake may or may not be a lie.

Half-Life

There is a ton of stuff for both the original and the sequel that's under $1, including the iconic games themselves and their standalone expansions. For the sake of brevity, here is a list:

  • Half-Life ($0.99 / €0.81 / £0.71)

    • Half-Life: Opposing Force - $049 / €0.39 / £0.39
    • Half-Life: Blue Shift - $049 / €0.39 / £0.39
    • Half-Life: Source (the controversial port of the original) - $0.99 / €0.81 / £0.71
  • Half-Life 2 ($0.99 / €0.81 / £0.71)

    • Half-Life 2: Episode 1 - $0.79 / €0.65 / £0.57
    • Half-Life 2: Episode 2 - $0.79 / €0.65 / £0.57

Postal 2

is a title from a completely different gaming era where all the touchy subjects were made fun of. From cat silencers over urinating on random people to killing Osama Bin Laden, Running With Scissors brought the players a way to offend just about everyone in a game laden with satire. You can grab it at the price of $0.99 / €0.99 / £0.69.

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

This is the original , back when Adam Jensen was not even a glint in the developers' eyes. Players assume the role of JC Denton and proceed to enjoy some of the most diverse approaches to objective completion even to this day. Back in 2000 when the game was released, it was nothing short of revolutionary and now it costs $0.97 / €0.97 / £0.69.

Tomb Raider

Considering there are , this will be a list similar to the one in Half-Life section.

  • Tomb Raider original series

    • Tomb Raider I - $0.97 / €0.97 / £0.69
    • Tomb Raider II - $0.97 / €0.97 / £0.69
    • Tomb Raider III - $0.97 / €0.97 / £0.69
    • Tomb Raider IV - $0.97 / €0.97 / £0.69
  • Tomb Raider after reboot

    • Tomb Raider: Legend - $0.97 / €0.97 / £0.69
    • Tomb Raider: Anniversary - $0.98 / €0.98 / £0.76
    • Tomb Raider: Underworld - $0.98 / €0.98 / £0.76

One Finger Death Punch

Ever watched those cool stickman fight animation sequences? Ever wanted to do that? That's exactly what offers. You can get into violent stickman madness at the price of $0.99 / €0.99 / £0.79. Considering 98 per cent people on Steam liked it, this may be a no-brainer purchase.

Kopanito All-Stars Soccer

Even though this game doesn't have the visuals of the Nekketsu Soccer League, it is obvious where the inspiration came from. It supports up to 5v5 matches and has no referee. Violent tackles are the way to go and super shots should make the silly game's goals that much more awesome. Considering the low price of $1.19 / €0.99 / £0.95, it wouldn't cost much to even buy for nine buddies to play the game with. Alternatively, you can go for singleplayer, couch co-op, couch PvP or online multiplayer.

While the price does exceed $1, we decided to include it on the list since the difference is minute while it's still under one EUR and GBP. The second "over $1" exception on the list is our honourable mention and the 11th IP in total.

Stronghold HD

RTS fans most likely have this one in their libraries already but there are also gamers who are now 18 years old but were born after the original Stronghold's release. Players don't simply lay out a bunch of buildings here as they build their base. They are building entire castles complete with the economy and then laying waste to what the others in the session built. While not expensive at the full price, was discounted to $1.49 / €0.99 / £0.87.

Purchasing everything from this list, with the exception of Half-Life: Source or the non-source version since they are the same game will bring you down for a total of $21.71. If you are looking for more deals under or around one US dollar, we suggest continuing browsing the Under $5 section at page 43 since we cherry-picked these games from the first 42. Why exactly that number? Because it's the answer to life, the universe and everything.
