Ubisoft and Red Storm have removed the VR requirement from their Star Trek: Bridge Crew. The game is now playable on PlayStation 4 and PC without a VR headset. Cross-play between VR and non-VR users is enabled.
Star Trek: Bridge Crew is a dream come true for Star Trek fans everywhere. Alas, not everyone - no matter how big of a Star Trek fan they might be - owns a VR headset. This predicament has made the game a bit less playable, unless you enjoy the company of NPCs.
Red Storm and Ubisoft took one look at their revenue and decided to make the game playable without an expensive VR headset. A "non VR" update has made Star Trek: Bridge Crew playable for everyone who owns a PlayStation 4 or a PC that meets the minimum system requirements*.
Ubisoft
The update represents "a broad compatibility patch for Star Trek: Bridge Crew that enables non-VR play as well as adding enhanced support for Windows Mixed Reality headsets."
"Uplay enables us to seamlessly connect players from any platform so that you will be able to join matches with both VR and non-VR players, expanding your pool of potential crewmates."
This means you can now play with your friends even if they are being a snob and using their headset. Those playing the non-VR version will get to take advantage of some graphical enhancements due to lighter processing requirements.
At the time of writing, Star Trek: Bridge Crew is 50 percent off on , which means you'll bag it for a cool £19.99.
