On the wings of several promotions as of late, the Roblox Corporation announced that Roblox has reached 100 million monthly active users, which means it's ahead of Mojang's Minecraft, which averages around 90 million users per month.
In celebration of the 100 million milestone, Roblox launched a free virtual item. We're talking about Goldrow shoulder accessory that's available for free from the Catalogue. It's a limited time offer though, so bear that in mind.
Founder and CEO of the Roblox Corporation David Baszucki said their vision was always to bring people together through play.
"Roblox began with just 100 players and a handful of creators who inspired one another, unlocking this groundswell of creativity, collaboration, and imagination that continues to grow", he said.
Beating Minecraft is no small feat, and considering that Roblox is a significantly older game, it's even more impressive.
Granted, the similarities between Roblox and Minecraft mostly stop at the blockiness, as both emulate the endlessly creative simplicity of Lego blocks, but in practice, they're quite different beasts.
Firstly Minecraft is a paid game that has recently overtaken Tetris as the best selling game ever, and its 176m copies sold says enough about the sort of scope we're talking about.
Roblox is technically free, although most of the highest quality content is locked behind a paywall. That said, it's still lower than Minecraft's entry price.
Roblox Corporation's announcement included testimony by their former player and current engineer Joseph Brosnihan, who said how his love for building things eventually resulted in Roblox infatuation and subsequently, employment.
"Roblox inspired me to study math and programming, and at the encouragement of another developer, I eventually applied for an internship where I reconnected with many of my friends I first met on Roblox. Now, I'm helping build the future of Roblox as an engineer at the company", he said.
Roblox reported hitting 90 million monthly active users in April 2019, which means it didn't take long to add another 10 million, and we're sure that partnerships like the one they made with Liverpool FC helped.
