Final Fantasy XV DLCs canceled, game director leaves the company

Final Fantasy XV game director Hajime Tabata has left Square Enix and Luminous Productions. Square Enix have also canceled three out of four DLC episodes for Final Fantasy XV as the team is said to focus on a new and unnamed AAA title.

Three of the four DLC episodes Anarea, Lunafreye and Noctis have been canceled by Square Enix while the fourth called Ardyn is still on the road for March 2019 release the company has announced, while the game director and Lumious Productions chief operating officer, Hajime Tabata has left both companies as of 31 October.

Global brand director Akio Ofuji has explained the reasoning behind the decision by saying that Luminous Productions' focus on the new project have resulted in the cancellation of Final Fantasy XV content.

"The company has decided to focus our resources on the development of AAA title. This resulted in the decision to cancel the production of three out of the four DLCs originally planned and introduced," Ofuji said and added that he wishes everyone to hold their hopes high for the new upcoming title. 

On the other side of the story, Tabata explained his resignation by confirming he's already looking forward to his next project. "In regards to my next endeavors and near future, I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after Final Fantasy XV. For that reason, I have decided to leave my current position and start my own business in order to achieve my goal," said the former Final Fantasy XV game director.

Tabata also declared his support for the upcoming Luminous titles. "From this day on, I will cheer on and support Square Enix and Luminous Productions together with all you fans. I would like to thank everyone who continues to support FFXV and those who have also supported myself personally," Tabata concluded.

According to Square Enix's financial results released yesterday, the company suffered a $33 million loss after a major change has been announced in Luminous Productions. Square Enix are yet to confirm if the loss is related to DLC cancellation, but that's at least one of the reasons if not the only after the most recent announcement.
