While Fortnite has had a compact voice chat system of its own since the game's inception, players were only allowed to talk with other players in their party. However, players have always demanded a proximity chat, which will enable the feature to talk with other players in the lobby.

What is Proximity Chat?
Proximity chat is a voice chat system that allows players to talk with other players outside their party standing near them. The proximity chat has been a popular feature seen in many popular games, including Roblox, PlayerUnkown's Battlegrounds and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.
How to enable Proximity Chat in Fortnite
Proximity chat in Fortnite is currently available for Creative and UEFN game modes. Here's a guide on how you can enable proximity chat in Fortnite to talk to other players in the lobby:
- Boot up an island with proximity chat enabled.
- Head to the Island Settings.
- Select the Mode tab in the settings.
- Navigate to the Voice Chat prompt.
- Click on Proximity Chat and turn it On.
- Apply changes to turn on Proximity Chat.
Unfortunately, proximity chat is currently unavailable in Battle Royale and Zero Build game modes. Epic Games has shared their plans to add this feature to their game in a future update. Currently, they are observing how the feature functions in Creative and UEFN game modes.
