Palworld is an open-world survival crafting game developed and published by Japanese indie studio Pocketpair, announced in 2021 and launched into early access on January 19, 2024. Set across the sprawling Palpagos Islands, players explore a vast world filled with over 200 creature-like beings called Pals, which can be caught, battled, ridden, and put to work building bases, farming resources, and running automated factories. That last part combined with the fact that Pals can be equipped with firearms earned the game its instantly iconic and reductive nickname: "Pokémon with guns." The reality is a much deeper genre mashup, drawing clear inspiration from ARK: Survival Evolved, Minecraft, and RimWorld, stitched together with a monster-catching loop that kept players hooked for dozens of hours at a time.
