Reshine is an upcoming cosy, single-player restoration game where you go to your attic and get your hands on old objects, take them apart, clean them up, and bring them back to life. I've never played these types of games, where you're doing things that one person might find boring while the other one could form a hobby afterwards, and after trying the Reshine demo, I feel like I was missing out on a lot. This was a short, but extremely satisfying experience that I can't wait to repeat when the game is finally out.
I wanted to know if it's really that cosy, and I got to say, it really is.
The idea alone is very interesting. The demo offered three things to restore: a compass, a gramophone, and a coffee grinder. All of these things come in horrible conditions, and you bring them back to life by taking every piece off, cleaning it, adding some colour or some shine, and putting it back together at the end. When it's all back together, you even get some fun facts about the object itself or some of the parts. And then they say video games aren't educational.
It's a rather therapeutic experience, and while it might sound mundane, it really isn't. The gameplay is very self-explanatory and you get the hang of it really quickly, and just in case you get stuck and can't figure out what you missed, there is a helpful hint system there as well. Taking every item, cleaning it, adding some shine, using steam and water to remove the dirt, and adding colour as the final touch, it's all so incredibly satisfying to do. And the tools you get are different, the demo showed a few of them, and I assume the full game will have more to offer. More tools, as well as more items to restore.
The minimalistic approach - you're in your attic, only you and your machines - makes this a personal experience. It isn't just a shop, it's my shop. I made myself tea before I started with the demo, and as I felt immersed into the entire experience, at one point I thought to myself that I am missing a pipe, one of those flat caps that Tommy Shelby wears, and a thick mustache. The atmosphere draws you in so much, and if the demo does it, then I can only imagine how fun the full game will be.
And you have a cat, a white kitty to keep you company, which you can of course pet. Honestly, GOTY right away, no questions asked.
Final thoughts
It's one of my favourite feelings when I get my hands on something I haven't played before, and it turns out that I have been missing out on a lot of fun. I felt the same with Bus Bound, and I have a feeling that I will enjoy Reshine as well. I absolutely had a blast playing this demo - I wish it was a bit longer - and I am very excited to get my hands on the full game, because it all ran so smoothly, so nicely, the relaxing music in the background, the minimalistic UI with just the things you need, ah it was such a chef's kiss.
I do recommend checking out the demo, and if you'll excuse me, I have a kettle to put on.
