Rockstar Games is an American video game publisher and developer based in New York City, established in December 1998 as a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive by Sam Houser, Dan Houser, Terry Donovan, Jamie King, and Gary Foreman, several of whom had previously worked at BMG Interactive, the original publisher of Grand Theft Auto. 

Sam Houser remains President of the company. Rockstar operates a global network of studios under the unified Rockstar brand, including Rockstar North in Edinburgh, the original developer of Grand Theft Auto, alongside studios in Toronto, San Diego, Leeds, India, and elsewhere, each contributing to the company's major releases.

The studio's flagship franchise, Grand Theft Auto, is the fourth-highest-selling video game franchise in history, with Grand Theft Auto V alone surpassing 215 million copies sold since its 2013 release, making it the second-best-selling game of all time. Other major series under the Rockstar banner include Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne, and Midnight Club, with Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) widely regarded as one of the finest narrative achievements in the medium. 

Rockstar's reputation for meticulous, expensive, and lengthy development cycles continues with Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for 19 November 2026 following two delays and a reported development budget exceeding $1 billion, making it the most anticipated and most expensive release in the studio's history.
