Frogwares
Frogwares is an independent video game developer founded in 2000 by French friends Wael Amr and Pascal Ensenat, with its primary development studio in Kyiv, Ukraine and a business office in Dublin, Ireland. One of the largest independent studios in Ukraine, Frogwares have built their reputation almost entirely on narrative-driven adventure games rooted in detective mechanics, most notably the long-running Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series, which spans more than ten titles dating back to 2002 and has sold over seven million copies worldwide.
The studio holds exclusive rights to the Sherlock Holmes game licence and is noted for the fidelity of its adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyle's source material. A public-facing commitment to Ukrainian identity has been a defining characteristic of the studio: in 2014 Frogwares dedicated Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments to the Heavenly Hundred, the protesters killed during the EuroMaidan Revolution, and refused a Russian publisher's demand to remove it.
Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 profoundly affected the studio, forcing team members to relocate, with some leaving to join Ukraine's defence forces. A former Frogwares developer, Volodymyr Yezhov, was killed in action near Bakhmut. Despite the ongoing conflict, the studio has continued to develop and release games throughout the war, including Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened (2023) and The Sinking City 2, launching 18 August 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
Their current and future titles are self-published, following protracted legal disputes with former publishers Focus Home Interactive and Nacon over the Sherlock Holmes series and The Sinking City respectively.
