Out of the blue, Sony announced via Twitter that on August 31, 2021, they will discontinue its service of selling and renting movies and TV shows on the PlayStation Store.
In an official announcement on their blog, they say:
When this change takes effect, users can still access movie and TV content they have purchased through PlayStation Store for on-demand playback on their PS4, PS5 and mobile devices, Sony assures.
Fans are already speculating that Sony could develop and soon introduce its Netflix-like Sony+ service, because as one Twitter user said, "they have PS Now, Crunchyroll (Anime) and Sony/Columbia movies bundle to offer", which makes a perfect combo.
We will monitor the situation and inform you about it in a timely manner.
