When a game lacks a compelling story or appealing graphics, it should possess some redeeming quality that captures our interest and prompts forgiveness. Regrettably, Skye Tales falls short in delivering any such element.

Numerous games available on the market, serve as evidence that elaborate graphics and an exceptionally strong narrative are not always necessary for a captivating game. At times, pure entertainment is the sole desire we seek from a gaming experience.

Armed with this perspective, I approached Skye Tales with an open mind. To be frank, the game lacks a conventional narrative, and its graphics harken back to the era of the PlayStation 2. Nevertheless, I was prepared to overlook these drawbacks, hopeful that the game would deliver an enjoyable and engaging experience. Regrettably, I must express my profound disappointment as the game failed to meet any of these expectations.

Naturally, it's imperative to consider the target audience when evaluating a game's merits, and in this case, the intended players are children. However, we've also seen numerous children's games that manage to strike a remarkable balance between educational value and amusement. Hence, this rationale doesn't necessarily bolster its standing.

So, let's delve into the anticipated features of Skye Tales and ascertain whether the game genuinely merits an investment of your time.

Story

Considering that "Tales" is a prominent element in the title of Skye Tales, one would naturally anticipate a semblance of narrative coherence during gameplay. Surprisingly, the story within Skye Tales deviates substantially from the conventional storytelling concept. Despite its brevity—the entire game can be completed within a mere two-hour span—the plot fails to provide any clear direction or purpose, leaving players perplexed about the characters' motivations and destinations from start to finish.

Even the very first Super Mario game we enjoyed three decades ago had a clear goal of rescuing the princess, in stark contrast to the enigmatic motivations and actions of our protagonist, Skye.

Praiseworthy are the short cutscenes that precede each level—a total of four in the game. These sequences endeavour to introduce Skye's upcoming adventures through rhyming narratives, an approach that could prove engaging for the younger audience. However, it's important to mention that these cutscenes, while creative, don't add to the overall understanding of the story in any aspect.

Basically, the story is about a kind young dragon that helps people with various tasks. This friendly dragon called Skye takes over responsibilities for a local handyman who decided to take a break from his busy life and finally go on a well-deserved vacation.

And that's pretty much all I grasped from the story. In the upcoming four levels, Skye journeys to four different places and does various tasks. However, I couldn't quite fathom why he was going to these places and what their true motivation was. You can only imagine how puzzling this would be for younger players.

Gameplay

In Skye Tales, the focal point is puzzles—the game's entire concept revolves around them. Every action you undertake involves a form of puzzle-solving.

To be straightforward, none of these puzzles present a significant challenge or immediate clarity. Given that the game is designed for children, it's reasonable not to anticipate overly intricate puzzles, so that aspect isn't a drawback. However, what caught me off guard the most was the inconsistency within the game.

On the one hand, the puzzles are notably simple, often revolving around matching colours and shapes—perfectly suited for young players. Yet, on the other hand, you, for instance, encounter a task involving a highly complex race to attain a quest item and break a record along the way. This specific challenge is considerably intricate and is likely to prove difficult for most children. You will find the likes of those on several occasions throughout your gameplay.

Should you opt to solely complete the core segments of the game without striving for a complete 100 per cent progression, each level encompasses the resolution of three primary tasks, summing up to a total of 12 main missions. However, pursuing a perfect score will undoubtedly lead to encountering a multitude of hurdles and complexities. This is precisely where the most captivating facet of Skye Tales comes into play—the challenges.

Within every level, a tally of challenges is maintained and recorded in the journal, necessitating resolution for those who strive for an unblemished 100 per cent completion of the game. These challenges exhibit varying degrees of intrigue, occasionally veering into perplexing territory where you might be tasked with solving tasks even in the absence of clear instructions.

The majority of these challenges revolve around actions such as spinning windmills five times or locating six blossoming cacti on the map through dashing, among similar activities. Yet, you'll also encounter tasks demanding the discovery of highly concealed, specific locations.

Speaking of dashing, let's discuss the gameplay mechanics of Skye Tales. In terms of mechanics, Skye Tales is strikingly straightforward. This 2D adventure positions players in control of a dragon traversing the map along two-dimensional axes. The dragon's primary tools encompass the dash command, enacted by pressing either the R2 or L2 button, and the "sing" action, accessed by pressing the triangle button, and that's pretty much it. These limited button usages underscore the game's uncomplicated gameplay, where a single function is often assigned to multiple buttons.

Graphics and sounds

In the earlier part of this review, I highlighted how impressive graphics don't necessarily guarantee a quality game—a standpoint I've long held. Some games can genuinely excel with a charming art style that doesn't rely on cutting-edge graphics technology. Unfortunately, Skye Tales departs from this notion, as its graphical presentation resides at an exceedingly modest level.

My experience with the game was on a PlayStation 5, although it's only available for the PlayStation 4. The textures evoke memories of the PlayStation 2 era, and while the characters sport a cartoonish design, they appear rather lifeless on-screen. The colour palette lacks vibrancy, giving way to a somewhat dreary and uninspiring visual impression. Special graphical effects are notably sparse, and the list of disappointments could extend further. In summary, the visual aspects of the game leave much to be desired.

In terms of level design, I would bestow a modest assessment. As previously noted, the game encompasses four distinct levels—initially featuring a standard design, followed by one dominated by rain and water, another set on a beach, and a final desert locale. Despite the diversity in locations, all four levels share strikingly similar designs, leading to potential confusion during navigation. This can be primarily attributed to the camera's less-than-optimal zoom, necessitating frequent recourse to the map to maintain clarity about your whereabouts. Unfortunately, this reliance on the map detrimentally impacts the immersion of the game.

Regarding the audio, I'd posit that the developers have achieved a commendable result. The melodies accompanying the gameplay align well with the level compositions, effectively contributing to the overall ambiance. The entirety of the soundtrack somewhat evoked memories of SpongeBob cartoons, leaving me with a sense that, at least in terms of sound, I was enveloped within that world. As for the remaining auditory elements, they're sufficiently satisfactory, meriting neither effusive acclaim nor pointed critique.

Conclusion

Speaking honestly, I tend to be the kind of individual who views the glass as half full and strives to unearth the positives in any situation. However, even with my sincere efforts to identify merits within Skye Tales, I find myself facing significant challenges.

Aside from the relatively engaging challenges, there's little else to remark upon—this is the distinguishing factor that sets Skye Tales apart. Featuring a conspicuous absence of narrative, dated graphics, and gameplay that tends towards the simplistic and occasionally mundane, I'm hard-pressed to offer a recommendation for Skye Tales, not even in the context of children's entertainment, let alone for adult players.
