Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain is coming to PlayStation 4 sometime in 2018. The announcement came today during Sony's Tokyo Game Show panel. The latest installment seems to have shifted in tone somewhat.

Keeping track of Earth Defense Force titles has always been a task beyond Telxvi's puny brain. There are usually irregular gaps in releases between different platforms and regions, with a naming system that makes it even less convenient to get a clear picture of which game released when or in what order.

Luckily, none of that really matters. Earth Defense Force is pretty much the same concept re-done with various improvements in all colours of the rainbow - giant bugs are attacking, grab some weapons and get to shooting.

The next instalment announced today during the Tokyo Game Show is more of that, but flashier and with a seemingly more serious tone to it.

Earth Defense Force is a series that was always more than conscious of the absurdity of its premise, so all that bug stomping took place with a healthy degree of self-aware humour. The announcement trailer above seems to be taking itself a tad more seriously compared to previous games, and that shift in tone could go both ways for the franchise. It's too early to tell.

Earth Defense Force: Iron Rain is expected to arrive on PlayStation 4 sometime in 2018. There is no word of ports or versions for other platforms, but that sort of thing might depend heavily on the title's sales performance, and whatever deal the publisher might have in place with Sony.
