Sony Interactive Entertainment's CEO, John Kodera has stated that PlayStation 4 has entered the final phase of its life cycle, which hints at the next generation PlayStation being in the works. With E3 coming up, we may get even more soon.

While PlayStation 4 had a good run, or technically is still having a good run, it appears that Sony are now looking forward to their next generation of consoles. According to Takashi Mochizuki, a journalist with Wall Street Journal, John Kodera claims that PS4 is at the end of its lifespan, but the recurring revenue is still keeping it above the water level.

Considering the statement came barely four weeks ahead of E3 2018, it is likely that Kodera has started building up hype for PlayStation 5 which could get teased or even announced during the event. That said, PlayStation 4's life cycle shouldn't end for another year or two for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, PlayStation 4 was announced nine months before it would start selling back in 2013. It is unlikely PlayStation 5 will have a shorter span between announcement and release, especially due to Kodera's statement that PlayStation 4 is still bringing in big bucks via recurring revenue.

Another hint at PlayStation 5 not coming so soon is Cyberpunk 2077. What does Cyberpunk 2077 have to do with anything, right? Well, Adam Kiciński confirmed that the game will be available on the current generation of consoles and hinted that it will work on next gen as well, all the way back in March 2018. When you put these two statements together, they make fairly interesting implications.

Either PlayStation 5 isn't coming any time soon if we assume Cyberpunk 2077 isn't going to be released for another year or two, or if PlayStation 5 is coming sooner than that, Cyberpunk 2077 will also have a closer release date than we might expect. It's a win-win situation really, but it's shrouded in much uncertainty, which will likely get cleared up during E3 2018.
