The 4.50 system software update is coming soon to the PlayStation 4 - we take a look at the announced features
The PlayStation Blog announced the features of the new PS4 system software update today. Sony seem to have listened to their fans requests as some of the most desired features have finally been added to their flagship console.
External HDD Support
Although it's already fairly easy to upgrade the HDD that came with the PS4 - having the option to add even more storage space via an external device has always been more than welcome. Sony have finally made this possible with their new update - and so PS4 now supports USB 3.0 HDDs up to 8TB in size. It's important to note that all the applications saved in the external hard drive will appear in the Content Launcher of the Home screen, making it easy to keep track of what apps you recently launched.
This feature adds the ability to set your favourite in-game screenshot as the background image of your PS4 home screen. The screenshot can be edited using the Photo Mode in Sharefactory, allowing you to customize the home screen to your heart's content.
Quick Menu Refresh
The PS4 quick menu was overhauled in the last system update, and now it will cover even less of the gameplay screen, as the new update makes it even more accessible. Users will now be able to create and join new parties and invite friends, without having to transition to the separate Party app. As Sony put it on their official blog: the goal is to keep you in the game, and not stuck in menus.
Simplified Notification List
Before the 4.50 update, the Notification app had a number of tabs on the left-hand side, such as: Game Alerts, Downloads, Uploads etc. All of these tabs have now been condensed to a single list, making it much easier to keep track of all the notifications in one place.
Post on PlayStation Network Activity Feeds
The new update will allow players to post directly on the PlayStation Network activity feeds. Under the What's New tab, there will be a new option to post things like text and screenshots directly into the activity feed. Players will also be able to tag games and other users to make sure their post hasn't gone unnoticed.
3D Blu-rays on PS VR
3D movies fans rejoice - as the new update adds the ability to watch 3D movies directly on the PS VR headset.
Apart from all the aforementioned features, Sony claim that there will be more additions to the list once the update officially launches.
