Aspyr Media has brought Sid Meier’s Civilization VI onto the iPad. You can download, install and play 60 turns for free. After the 60 turns, you'll be asked to pay a one-time fee in order to unlock the rest of the game.
Sid Meier’s Civilization VI just landed on the App Store. This is the real deal, unlike the Cuphead mishap from a couple of days ago. The turn-based strategy game is now available on the App Store for everyone with an iPad.
We're all treading a bit more carefully after the Cuphead blunder, but behold, Aspyr Media has brought the full Civlization VI game to iPads. The App Store version of the game is the full Civilization VI game you'd play on your PC, rebuilt to be playable on a device with a touchscreen.
Civilization VI for iPad will run on iOS 11.1.2 or later and only be playable on iPad Air 2, iPad 2017, or any of the iPad Pros. Not bad for a Civilization game that has been fully ported. If this was a spin-off or a "mobile first" edition of the game, the requirements would be a touch more reasonable. A touch, honestly.
Even though the feat of porting the game to iPad is admirable in its own right, the pricing just might steal the show on this one. Aspyr Media will give the game to you for free. You can download Civlization VI and play up to 60 turns before you have to pay anything.
After you use up the free turns, a one time unlock will be required. Here, children, we come to the doozy of this piece. Ahem, the one time unlock for Civlization VI on iPad will set you back $60 (£44.99). A dollar for every turn you got for free.
Are you outraged? You should be. This is some AAA pricing creeping its creepy way into the mobile game market. I know this is a AAA game optimised for an iPad, but come on, I'd like to see who'll pay that kind of money. On purpose!
There is some good news though. You can buy the unlock for 50 percent off until 04 January. Aspyr Media will work to bring all DLCs and expansion packs onto the iPad in the future. Android and iPhone devices are also being ogled.
At the moment, the port only supports LAN multiplayer and features no cross platform multiplayer for the Steam version. You can check it out for free on the App Store.
