Niantic have officially announced the next Pokemon Go event and it's a crossover with Shonen Jump manga series One Piece. As things stand now, the crossover event will start on Monday, 22 July 2019 and will last until 29 July 2019.
Niantic's augmented reality title Pokemon Go is set for another event, the developer have officially confirmed on their website. Niantic revealed that a new event will be a crossover with popular Shonen Jump manga and anime series One Piece.
The crossover will introduce Pikachu with a straw hat, to represent The Straw Hat Pirates and Monkey D. Luffy, the main character in One Piece. The new crossover event is being held as part of an ongoing campaign for the support and reconstruction of the Kumamoto City in Japan, which was hit by an earthquake in 2016.
Also, One Piece statues will be installed around Kumamoto Prefecture, serving as a PokeStop featuring special art drawn by Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece. Additionally, players will be able to pick up Luffy's straw hat avatar costume item at the statues.
The statue installation and event are part of a support for the city and a celebration of Pokemon Go's third and One Piece's 22nd anniversary at the same time.
As it stands at the moment, the crossover event will start on Monday, 22 July 2019 and will run for a full week, before ending on Monday, 29 July 2019.
The surprise crossover event is certainly the biggest one that arrived in Pokemon Go. While Pokemon is larger franchise than One Piece, the main character from the manga - Monkey D. Luffy - is one of the few characters that can rival Pikachu when it comes to popularity in Japan.
