Fortnite's explosive success in 2018 reflected on the massive increase in popularity for the biggest streaming platform, Twitch.tv. As Fortnite started declining in 2019, Twitch is also losing popularity with other platforms rising up.
League of Legends has been persistently at the top of Twitch viewership for years until Fortnite exploded in an extremely successful manner in 2018, overtaking Riot's MOBA at the top.
However, interest in the battle royale genre has seen a sharp decline, sending ripples all over the gaming industry and complementary services. The popularity drop was reflected by the start of Fortnite's decline, which is shedding viewers on Twitch, according to the latest report by Newzoo.
The decline in Fortnite popularity also dragged down Twitch since it also grew as viewers started watching high profile Fortnite streamers in 2018.
As a result, Epic Games are no longer the most popular publisher on the streaming service, overtaken by Riot Games and the combined efforts of League of Legends and the recently released Teamfight Tactics.
Twitch is still by far the biggest streaming platform though, with the biggest competition being YouTube Live, Mixer and DLive. All of these platforms saw a huge growth in popularity as their big cousin started slipping.
YouTube Live has recently seen the all-time highest hours streamed, watched and concurrent viewers (CCV). While Twitch saw a rise in the total number of streamer channels and decrease in other metrics, YouTube saw the opposite as fewer people use the service now but have more output and attention.
Meanwhile, Mixer saw some major growth since hours watched metric increased by 357 per cent year-on-year and 32 per cent, compared to Q1 2019. Similarly, average CCV is up by 50 per cent in Q2 2019.
Lastly, there is a new kid on the block, called DLive. The name is still a bit obscure but it's PewDiePie's platform of choice and he has been driving a lot of traffic there. When he teamed up with Ninja for a Fortnite session, his stream peaked at over 168,000 viewers but the average CCV was around 129,000 for the duration of the 170 minute stream.
