Bandai Namco have rolled out a Behind the Scenes trailer for their action RPG Code Vein, where the developer went into great detail on what to expect from NPCs in the game, especially the one that's bound to be your best friend - Partner.
Code Vein's director Hiroshi Yoshimura said that Partner was envisioned as a player's trusted sidekick, who'll make exploration of dungeons a bit more dynamic and a tad safer too.
The idea for Partner NPCs came from Code Vein's associate/content director Yuta Yamamoto, who said that implementation was quite challenging at times, but that the character will give players new gaming experience.
"What we focused on with respect to the Partners in this game, the thing we worked on hoping to achieve, is to give players the impression that the Partner is paying attention to them taking action with the player in mind. That was a key point for us", Yamamoto said.
Ensuring that Partners are useful to Code Vein players, as opposed to getting in your way and just being a nuisance, was crucial, and Bandai Namco claim to have taken great care to implement it seamlessly.
Partners are pretty autonomous most of the time, and they'll fight others whether you're paying attention or not, but the goal was to steer clear of burdening Code Vein players with babysitting.
Code Vein's associate director Yuichi Yoda said, "The Partner supports the player, which simply put means that when the player guards themselves, he guards together with them. The Partner matches their strides to the player and gets between the player and a long-range enemy to block projectiles, or waits to see what the player does".
Now, Code Vein is a Souls-like title, which basically means soul-crushing difficulty, so players will likely find a use for all the help they can possibly get.
Having initially been scheduled for launch in September 2018, Bandai Namco delayed Code Vein to 27 September 2019, and it looks like they'll make it this time.
