Riot Games' take on Auto Chess, Teamfight Tactics, caused quite a ruckus on 27 June 2019 because the developers apparently thought it would be a good idea to integrate it into one of the most played games in the world as a side mode.
Auto Chess is the newest trend on the gaming market and one of the biggest games in the world such as League of Legends gets its own version of said genre, it is only natural that it will garner a lot of attention.
It proved to be true with Teamfight Tactics, the League of Legends version of Auto Chess. One thing no one anticipated is that Riot Games would cram both games on the same servers.
As you can imagine, the increased load caused server issues which prompted Riot to enable queue throttling in order to keep the servers from crashing. This, in turn, resulted in extremely long queue times.
North American players reported queues as long as 30 minutes which wouldn't be really that odd if those players were League of Legends Challengers where it's harder to find a match but these reports came from the regular Teamfight Tactics-playing folks.
EUW server got the queue throttling as well later on and Riot stated that the issues will stay through the peak times, which is expected since these times bring in even more players.
Considering that Teamfight Tactics quickly reached the top of Twitch's concurrent viewers, it is easy to imagine how big the demand is for this game. It is quite unclear why Riot thought their servers could handle the additional load since League of Legends itself is a massive game on its own.
Anyway, the situation had been slightly stabilised at the time of writing since I could at least queue up for a game, regardless of the mode which wasn't the case in earlier European evening hours. Maybe this is a sign, maybe the autobattlers are the end of the gaming era.
